Identify paid search keywords (useful for Google Ads)

Differentiate similar content or links within the same ad (A/B testing)

UTM Best Practices

✓ Do

  • • Use consistent naming conventions (lowercase, underscores)
  • • Be descriptive but concise
  • • Document your UTM naming strategy
  • • Test your links before launching campaigns
  • • Use UTM builder for every external link

✗ Don't

  • • Use UTMs for internal links (skews analytics)
  • • Include spaces or special characters
  • • Mix uppercase and lowercase inconsistently
  • • Forget to track your UTM links somewhere
  • • Use overly long or complex parameter values
